Educational institutes to get autonomy based on ranking and accreditation
Educational institutions in India will soon be given autonomy according to their rankings and accreditation, HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar announced this on Thursday.
The institutions categorized under “good institutions”, “average institutions” and “bad institutions” will get autonomy accordingly. The categorization will be based on the NAAC accreditation and the position of institutions based on National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). NIRF is government’s ranking of institutions like QS rankings.
Those with good accreditation and a better ranking will be categorised as good and the ones with lesser grades and ranking as average and bad.
“We will give autonomy to institutions based on their categorization. The institutes that are under the category of good institutes will get complete autonomy, the ones under the category of average institutes will get 50 per cent autonomy and 50 per cent will be government interference,” said Javadekar.
“The institutes that have been categorised as bad institutes will have 90 per cent of government interference,” he added. Autonomy to educational institutions in India has been one of the major reasons for discord between educationists and policy makers. This move, which is likely to be implemented by next year, is sure to cheer up the institutes.
The current HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar has been in support of giving more autonomy to institutions. He has also been supportive of the IIM autonomy bill.“Autonomy brings more ownership and responsibility among the administrators of the institutions. This will create more competition, a more hands-on approach, better laboratories, more skilled graduates and more employability among graduates,” he said while addressing at the 12th FICCI Higher Education Summit on Thursday.
A panelist from UK also pressed upon the importance of giving autonomy to institutions while talking about the best practices that India can adopt from the UK education system.
